Substack calls itself “the app for independent voices.”
That’s fine — but it’s also generic. Independence is not scarce. Everyone wants to be independent. What’s scarce — and what actually creates leverage — is being paid for independent thinking.
If I were doing a Category-of-One for Substack, I’d frame it as:
CO1: “The voice for monetising independent thinking.”
Because that’s the real shift. You don’t just write. You don’t just share. You build an audience that values you enough to pay. That’s not about freedom of speech — that’s about freedom of economics.
Reflection: Are you wrongly drawn into the freebie mindset — giving away your best work because you think that’s what builds credibility? Or is it time to shape your positioning around the unique way you monetise thinking itself?
